Chairman's Message

From providing basic healthcare to those who need to providing cutting-edge modern research to those who want, we aim to embrace the entire healthcare spectrum.

Mr. Samir Somaiya

"Somaiya Ayurvihar is teaching hospital. It aims to teach medical education, provide medical care, and engage in medical research. Our aim is to do it well."

Somaiya Ayurvihar was founded by Shri K. J. Somaiya. He wanted to complement Somaiya Vidyavihar, which was an educational society. There was no medical education there. Also, for many years, Shri K. J. Somaiyaused to organize medical camps in rural India, and keenly felt the desire to serve those in medical need.

He used to often recite:

न त्वहं कामये राज्यं न स्वर्गं नापुनर्भवम्। कामये दुःखतप्तानां प्राणिनामार्तिनाशनम्॥

ʻNeither do I desire kingdoms, nor heaven. All I wish is to help alleviate the suffering of those in need.ʼ

Somaiya Ayurvihar was founded to give a tangible meaning to this desire, and started functioning as a hospital primarily providing health care to the needy. It also was a teaching hospital, so that it could create doctors, nurses, and other health care practitioners, who in their own way, and at their own time, continue to further the mission as sung in the prayer mentioned above.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Somaiya Ayurvihar engages the community by performing rural health camps continuously. We have an active Department that works in the community, and has an active department of preventive and social medicine.

Somaiya Ayurvihar, is also meant to provide and deliver, wholesome health, a health system that integrates modern medicine, Ayurveda, Yoga, and other forms and systems of health care.

We have come a long way, but have to travel far. Teaching hospitals world over are always at the cutting edge of medical care and research. They are considered the best in medical care and practice. We must be no different. We have to be considered the best in medical care, while at the same time, staying true to our mission, of providing health care to those who need it most, and also to those who can least afford it. Our research should be such that strives to find the cures of tomorrow, and the care should be such that provides the best comfort of today. Our students must be inspired to follow in the dreams of our founder. This is our aim, and these are now our dreams.

With the blessings of the Almighty, we will strive to achieve the aims of our founder.
